Previous research experience is probably the most important criteria when you are applying for a Ph.D admit as this will show your research interest and if you have any previous publications its a added plus. Having said that, I would add that there are applicants even at the top universities who got in without any publictions. In fact publication means you have had success at research, but what about the failures (which has a higher percentage!)? Hence research just does not mean having papers, it really means having experinced what it takes to do research. There are many places where you can gain some research experience.
If you are an undergraduate then you can do the following,
- Do research with your professors or professors from other institutes.
- Apply for summer fellowship! It always looks good on your CV. Like in India, you could apply for TIFR and IISc Fellowships.
- Most undergraduate courses involve doing research in the final semester. Make good use of this and plan ahead as to where and what you want to do.
- Many companies have training and research internship positions available through Summer and Winter breaks, apply for those.
If you have completed an MS,
-In addition to the above you probably have done an MS Research Thesis.
